The Role of the Infection Preventionist

According to the Association for Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology (APIC), individuals who work in Infection Prevention and Control ensure that healthcare workers and patients are following protocols to prevent infection. Some of the responsibilities the Infection Preventionists (IP) take to prevent infections include hand hygiene education, proper Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) usage, education about bloodborne pathogens, monitoring for possible infection trends in hospitals or other healthcare facilities, developing protocols and policies, and communicate with public health agencies. This is just a brief overview of the vast responsibilities of IPs, however, their primary goal is to protect the safety of the patient. If there is a procedure or protocol designed to ensure patient safety, there was likely an IP involved in the process.
